AirAsia is a low-cost Malaysian airline, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur. It operates flights to over 165 destinations worldwide and serves millions of passengers annually. However, its baggage policy is not different from other major air carriers and has its own sets of guidelines. If you are planning to travel with AirAsia, then you must go through its baggage policy before you go ahead with packing your luggage.

AirAsia Baggage Policy

AirAsia is one of the most popular airlines in Asia, and other continents. Although you may not find booking a ticket with AirAsia difficult, certainly you need to know the exact baggage limitation allowed by the airline. If you bring additional luggage or your luggage weighs more than the allotted weight, then you may end up paying an excess baggage fee.

So here are some key points to remember the AirAsia baggage weight:

  • AirAsia allows 2 hand bags in the cabin, except for the infants.
  • You are entitled to one piece of free checked baggage up to 15 kg.
  • All carry-on luggage must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
  • If you have additional luggage or your luggage exceeds the weight or linear restrictions, then you need to pay excess baggage fees.
  • You can save on baggage fees by pre-booking baggage online.
  • The fees you have paid during pre-booked baggage online is non-refundable if your luggage weight is less than the pre-booked weight.

AirAsia Carry-on Baggage Allowance

The cabin baggage or carry-on baggage allowance depends on the cabin class and destination as well. So, if you are bringing an additional luggage or you have an oversized baggage, it is better to book the cabin class that allows you to bring that extra accessories.

  • All guests are allowed to carry 2 pieces of cabin baggage on board. It must contain one cabin baggage and one laptop bag or one hand bag or one small bag.
  • One cabin baggage must not exceed the dimension of 56cm × 32cm × 23cm.
  • The cabin luggage must fit on the overhead bin.
  • The laptop bag, the handbag, or the small bag must not exceed the dimension more than 40cm × 30cm × 10cm
  • It must fit under the seat in front of you.
  • The total weight of both the pieces must not exceed 7 kg.

Notes: Bulkhead seats do not have underseat storage during takeoff and landing.

Smart baggage are permitted in the cabin, under the following conditions:

  • If the batteries are non-removable, then it must not exceed 0.3g for lithium and 2.7 Wh for lithium ion.
  • If the batteries are removable, then you must remove the batteries and carry them as or in the cabin baggage.
  • WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS must be switched off.
  • A maximum of 2 spare batteries are allowed in the cabin.

AirAsia Checked Baggage Allowance

With AirAsia checked baggage allowance, you can bring as many bags as you want as long as the luggages you brought is within your purchased or complimentary baggage allowance. Before you go ahead with your packing, check out the dimensions and weight requirements.

  • If you purchase more than 30 kg of baggage allowance, note that each bag you will be checking must meet the linear dimension of 119cm × 119cm × 81cm.
  • It must not exceed more than 32 kg per piece.
  • Baggage allowance is inclusive for tickets purchased by Value Pack, Premium Flex or Premium Flatbed.
  • Complimentary checked baggage will be given to passengers traveling to Dhaka and on domestic flights operated by AirAsia Indonesia.
  • The available pre-booked baggage allowance are-
    • 15 kg (Available on domestic flights only)
    • 20 kg
    • 25 kg
    • 30 kg
    • 40 kg
  • For passengers traveling to/from the United States, checked baggage will be available on pre-booking:
    • 1 piece with maximum weight 20 kgs
    • 2 pieces with a maximum weight 20 kgs each.

Purchasing or Upgrading Checked Baggage Allowance

Pre Book Online
  • If you want to purchase or upgrade your existing checked baggage allowance, you can do it at least 4 hours before the flight’s scheduled departure.
  • You can do it via My Bookings, AirAsia Mobile App, or AVA.
  • It is non-refundable.
At the Airport
  • You can upgrade the service at the airport as well on the day of departure.
  • The checked baggage allowance is limited to 15 kgs per guest each way and will be charged according to the airport baggage fee.
  • AirAsia India passengers are allowed to bring 20 kgs per guest each way.
  • Additional weight in excess is subject to prevailing excess baggage fees.

AirAsia Baggage Allowance for Infants

  • Infants who are under the age of 2, are not allocated any cabin baggage allowance.
  • Children above the age of 2 years old are permitted the same baggage allowance as an adult.
  • When traveling with children, you cannot bring prams, strollers, car seats, and buggies in the cabin. You must check them with other checked baggage. It will be a part of your purchased checked baggage allowance.
  • Pockit baby strollers or foldable baby strollers are allowed as cabin baggage. However, it must be within the cabin baggage policy.
  • Only one infant is allowed per adult and the infant must be seated on lap. No perambulators are allowed on board.
  • You must bring enough food, diapers, and other supplies to last through the time in the airport and on the plane.
  • AirAsia and AirAsia X limit the number of infants on each flight. So, you need to book early.
  • On AirAsia India flights, you are eligible to bring 7 kgs of hand baggage for your infant.

AirAsia Baggage Allowance for Pets

AirAsia does not accept pets on board, except for AirAsia India and AirAsia Japan.

AirAsia Damaged or Delayed Baggage Policy

Damaged Baggage

If your baggage is damaged due to mishandling by the crew, the airline will compensate you. You need to contact the airline’s airport counter as soon as you get the damaged baggage and raise a complaint. However, AirAsia will not be responsible if,

  • Damage to accessories and wear and tear may not be covered by the airline.
  • If your bag is damaged or delayed as a result of overpacking or unsuitable packaging, then the airline will not be responsible.

Delayed Baggage

If the delayed baggage causes you any inconvenience, you can follow the below steps:

  • As soon as the baggage stops coming from the carousel, you should immediately approach the airline’s counter at the airport.
  • Provide them with your booking number or baggage tag, which was given to you at the time of check in.
  • A Property Irregularity form will be given to you and upon completion, the staff will give you a PIR number.
  • If your baggage is found, a delivery arrangement will be initiated to your address.

AirAsia baggage fees depend on the route and cabin class. If you have brought extra luggage or your luggage weighs more than the allotted limits, then you must pay for it. AirAsia Restricted Items

AIRAsia takes strict measures to prohibit its passengers from bringing restricted items on board. The airline has made a list of restricted items, which are as follows:

  1. Pointed or edged weapons and sharp objects
  2. Blunt instruments like baseball, softball bats, clubs, batons, kayak, canoe paddles, skateboards, billiards, snooker, etc.
  3. Batteries (lithium, lithium ion cells, batteries, and spare batteries)
  4. Any guns, pistol, firearms, signal flare pistol, toy guns, ball bearing guns, industrial bolt and nail gun, etc.
  5. Explosives and flammable substances
  6. Chemical and toxic substances
  7. Live plants and flowers
