Delta Checked Baggage Allowance

Delta has a very flexible Delta checked baggage allowance, which permits its passengers to bring 2 standard bags. All passengers meeting Delta’s baggage measurements, are allowed to check in their luggage free of charge. The allowance as well as baggage fees depend on the cabin class, and the destination. Here are some key points to remember before you book your Delta flight.

  • Main Cabin class passengers traveling within the United States, without a Delta SkyMiles, American Express Card, Medallion Status or Active Military exceptions, are required to pay 40 USD for the second standard checked bag under 23 kg each way.
  • Baggage size must not exceed 158 cm, when you total Length + Width + Height.
  • For Delta SkyMiles Medallion Status members and Delta SkyMiles American Express card members, the first standard checked bag is free.
  • Checked baggage each way price varies by route and fare class.
  • Passengers flying on domestic routes can redeem their miles towards checked baggage at most airports during check in.
  • Up to 10 bags may be checked per passenger on flights operated by Delta or Delta Shuttle.
  • Up to 4 bags may be checked per passenger on Delta Connection carrier flights.
  • The acceptance of excess baggage depends on the availability of space on Delta Connection carriers. If the baggage cannot be carried on the same flight, then the airline will transport your luggage via the next available flight.
  • Camera, videotape, film, lighting, and sound equipment are accepted. However, it must be tendered by network representatives or local broadcasting companies. Any bags exceeding the allocated limits are accepted on a stand by basis.

Overweight Baggage on International Flights

Delta Baggage Allowance for Infants

Like any other major airlines, Delta too is committed to make traveling with infants and children easy and convenient. So before you make a reservation with Delta and bring your kid onboard, check out what Delta’s infant baggage allowance states.

  • You can bring a child safety seat in certain circumstances. If there is a vacant passenger seat available on your row or you have purchased a ticket for the child, you can place your child in FAA-approved child restraint during take-off and landing.
  • You can bring strollers and car seats free of charge on board. These don’t count towards your baggage allowance.
  • Passengers may also bring a booster seat or other infant seat, breast pump or other associated cooler bag.
  • If children are traveling for free, then any baggage for the child will be counted as part of the adult’s baggage allowance.

Unticketed Infants / Children

Children traveling for free are not entitled to any baggage allowance. So any bag you carry for the infant / child, will be counted as a part of your baggage allowance.

Ticketed Infants / Children

  • Children traveling on an international flight with a ticket that is 10% of the adult’s fare are allowed to bring one checked bag up to 20 lbs or 10 kg. The maximum dimension should be 45 inches (length + width + height), along with a checked collapsible stroller or push-chair.
  • An infant in arms on a Transatlantic Basic Economy Fare is not eligible for a free baggage allowance.
  • Children traveling with a ticket that is 50% of the adult’s fare are entitled to Delta’s standard baggage allowance.

Delta Baggage Allowance for Pets

Delta passengers can bring their furry friend on board. Delta welcomes small cats and dogs in the cabin. Although some animals can be shipped as a carry on, other large animals must be shipped in the cargo. To know more details about Delta’s pet policy, read below.

Carry On Pets

  • Small dogs, cats, and household birds are allowed in the cabin.
  • The pets must be fit in a ventilated and leak-proof carrier comfortably, so that they can stand up, turn around, and lie down.
  • Your pet must be at least 10 weeks old for domestic travel.
  • The pet must be 16 weeks old if traveling to the US from another country and must be at least 15 weeks old if traveling to the European Union.
  • One female cat or dog is allowed to travel with her unweaned litter, if the litter is between 10 weeks to 6 months old.
  • There is no limit on the numbers of litter.
  • 2 pets of the same breed and size may be allowed to travel in the same container as long as the container is spacious and comfortable to them. It will be charged as 1 pet.

Carry On Kennel Requirement

  • The kennel must be big enough so that the dog or the cat can fit comfortably without touching any side of the kennel.
  • The kennel must fit under the seat in front of you.
  • Both soft and hard sided kennels must be leak proof and must have proper ventilation on three sides for domestic routes and four sides for international routes.
  • Maximum carry-on kennel dimensions should be 18” × 11” × 11”.
  • The pet must stay inside the kennel with the door secured.
  • If your dog is large in size, you can ship your pet on Delta Cargo. Exceptions are made for service animals, U.S. Military dogs, and U.S. State Department Foreign Service Office.

Delta Air Line Delayed or Damaged Baggage Policy

If you haven’t received your luggage or your luggage is damaged or somehow the airline lost your luggage, then under such circumstances, the airline may compensate you. Know about Delta’s delayed, lost, or damaged policy:

  • If your bag is delayed then notify the same to one of Delta’s representatives. When you file the report, the representative will give you a file reference number, which you will need to initiate a claim or track your luggage.
  • You may be eligible for a bag fee rebate if your first or second paid checked bags have been delayed for more than 12 hours after being reported.
  • If you have paid Delta for a checked bag, then you may be eligible for a rebate in the form of an Electronic Travel Voucher for the applicable amount paid in the event that you do not receive your bag within 12 hours from reported delay.
  • If you have lost an unchecked item onboard, in the Delta Gate area or at Delta Sky Club, the airline will track your luggage and give it back to you. If you are missing any item, then you need to file the complaint with the airline immediately.
  • If you receive a damaged baggage, bring the issue to the Delta Air Lines Baggage Office immediately after arrival. A Delta representative will direct you to fill out a form if needed. You must report the damage within 24 hours of arrival in the United States and within 7 days for international travel.

Sports Equipment

You are allowed to bring most of your sports equipment with you while flying with Delta. However, the standard checked baggage fee may apply based on cabin, destination, and a total number of checked bags.
